Healing Hearts through Artful Expression
Art Therapy
Art therapy is a mental health profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship (AATA).
Art making is seen as an opportunity to express oneself imaginatively, authentically, and spontaneously, an experience that, over time can lead to personal fulfillment, emotional reparation, and transformation.
The sensory qualities of art making often provide a way for us to tap into our emotions and perceptions more easily than we could with words alone. Personal processing with art images can contribute to individual insights.
Art Therapy is a tool to facilitate self-expression and healing. Anyone can benefit from expression through Art Therapy—no previous experience or art skill is necessary.
Benefits and purposes of Art Therapy include:
self-understanding
search for meaning
personal growth
self-empowerment
healing
explore feelings and emotions
Art making can be a form of meditation, finding inner peace and calm through artistic expression. Creative activities can increase brain levels of serotonin, the chemical linked to relieve depression. History shows us that individuals under great stress have been known to make art as a way to express and transform inner conflicts.
